Are moral values universal? This is the question raised by this research project developed at the University of Oxford's Institute of Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology. With a team of interdisciplinary researchers, we bridge between economics, philosophy, and cognitive and social anthropology, and explore how moral values relate to evolution and proto-urban social practices.

We look at the evolution and transmission of moral values across a large sample of human societies, by running text-based analyses on thousands of ethnographical descriptions stored in the Human Relation Area Files. This research hence aims at providing a cross-cultural knowledge on how the evolution of social and material cultures co-occur.
